The Boathouse

The UL Sport Boathouse, is a unique facility on campus, built through student funding in 2009, it was opened on 30th September by Mr. Peter Power T.D, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs. Located adjacent to the River Shannon, it is home to Ireland’s only indoor powered rowing tank. The rowing tank simulates various weather and water conditions whilst accommodating up to eight rowers at a time and can facilitate both scull and sweep rowing.

In 2009, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between UL, UL Sport and Student Life to ensure the continued successful support for the four key UL student residential clubs and the ongoing management of this facility.

In order to preserve and enhance the use and development of the Boathouse the parties sought to integrate the operation and management of the Boathouse into the operations of UL Sport while recognising and preserving the rights of UL Student Life, its membership and constituent clubs – namely:

  • UL Rowing Club
  • UL Kayak Club
  • UL Sub-Aqua Club
  • UL Mountain Bike Club
