The Facilities

The UL Boathouse is home to Ireland’s only indoor powered rowing tank. The rowing tank simulates various weather and water conditions whilst accommodating up to eight rowers at a time and can facilitate both scull and sweep rowing.

Other facilities within the Boathouse:

  • A Gym area to support rower specific requirements, including 15 ergs, and strength and conditioning area.
  • Meeting room
  • Canteen area with cooking facilities for resident clubs / visiting Groups
  • A beautiful deck area overlooking the river Shannon
  • Office /Administrate area
  • Male and female changing rooms, shower and toilet facilities.

All of our clubs have their own designated storage unit where all associated club equipment is safely stored, each club has their own unique access point and access is only authorised to those assigned clubs. In more recent years, the UL Outdoor Pursuits club has acquired a small area within the Kayak facility to store club equipment, as agreed with the Kayak Club. The entire facility is, as per all UL buildings, supported by UL Campus Security.

UL Boathouse has been used by a number of other local and national rowing clubs eg St. Michaels RC, Shannon RC, Castleconnell RC, Clonmel RC and UCD RC to mention a few, while Rowing Ireland have utilised it for summer camps and other rowing programmes. This is a superb facility to offer the wider rowing communities, in particular during inclement weather conditions where river flooding means outdoor training is not feasible. UL Boathouse offers those clubs continued training in a safe indoor environment. Local Transition Year school groups have also availed of this unique rowing experience, for many students their first exposure to rowing.
