Powerboat Courses & Training:
- Introduction to Powerboating Certificate
The aim of this powerboat course is to provide a short practical introduction to boat handling and safety on powerboats being used on all Irish waters. It is ideally suited to anyone new to powerboating and those whose primary role will be as crew on a powerboat. By the end of the course participants will be able to safely and effectively crew a powerboat and take the helm while under supervision. Introduction to Powerboating €125 per person (One Day Course)
- National Powerboat Certificate
The aim of this two day course is to develop the skills and knowledge that allow participants to safely and effectively skipper an open powerboat by day, on inland and coastal waters with which they are familiar. The ISA recommends this Certificate as the minimum level of training/knowledge required before anyone uses a power boat on their own. In the majority of cases beginners would do this course and the Introduction to Powerboating as part of the same three day course. The certificate can also be achieved through direct assessment by a Powerboat Instructor. National Powerboat Certificate €250 per person per course (2 Day Course)
- Safety Boat Certificate
By the end of this course, the successful candidate will have a wide range of boat handling techniques and experience in the provision of safety cover for sailing events. Areas covered will include, towing, assistance with race management, mark laying and the provision of assistance for sailing dinghies (single handed & crewed), sail boards and canoes. The ISA recommends this certificate as the minimum level of training/knowledge required by the coxswains of boats providing safety cover at Clubs, Regattas, Coaching or Courses of Instruction. - International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) for users of pleasure craft was established under resolution No. 40 of the Working Party on Inland Water Transport for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The aim of the ICC is to provide boat owners and people wishing to charter boats with an internationally recognised document certifying their competence to skipper a boat for recreational use. ULAC is a recognised ICC assessment centre and certificates are issued through the offices of the Irish Sailing Association on behalf of the Irish Government. What to bring on a Powerboat Course:
1. Plenty of warm clothes (including hat and gloves) + a change of clothes.
2. Wellies, Booties or boat shoes.
3. Waterproofs or oilskins.
4. For safety Boat courses and instructor courses you will be required to go in the water- wetsuits are supplied.
5. Buoyancy aid or lifejacket will be provided.
6. Pencil and paper to take notes.
Please note: For all weekend courses participants will have 1 hour for lunch, all are welcome to bring packed lunches and use the indoor facilities, tea/coffee will be provided.
Sailing Courses & Training:
- Lough Derg Sailing Tour
Take to the water with the wind in your sails and enjoy the clear blue water of Lough Derg. An experienced instructor will ensure you are safe and dry and allow you to sit back and enjoy the feeling of being swept along by the breeze or if you are up for a splash you can go for a refreshing dip. Trips take 2.5 hours and are fully guided, all equipment is provided. €45 per person (min 2 people).
- Taste of Sailing
A short introduction to the thrills & spills of sailing, this sailing courses will provide a complete beginner with a flavor of the sport in a controlled, safe environment. The aim of this brief introductory course is to give you a positive introduction to the thrill of sailing. €100 per person per course (One Day Course).
- Start Sailing
The aim of the Start sailing course is to provide the novice sailor with a brief introduction to sailing. By the end of the course, the sailor will have covered basic boat handling techniques and essential background knowledge. It is recommended that sailors go on to consolidate this short introduction with the Basic Skills Course (Level 2). €180 per person per course.
- Basic Skills
By the end of this course the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor in light winds. Basic Skills €180 per person.
- Improving Skills
Speed And Spinnaker, hiking with your harness, passage planning and using all types of dinghies. This course will enable the candidate to make seamanship decisions and rig and sail any type of dinghy. Improving Skills €400 per person
What to bring onto our sailing course
1. Swimming Togs, Towel, Shower Gear.
2. Old Shoes or footwear to wear into the water.
3. Pencil and paper our something to take notes.
4. Wet Suit, Buoyancy aid and all equipment will be provided.

Afloat: Our “outdoor classroom” is Lough Derg. One of the world’s finest Lakes, it offers a wide variety of conditions for dinghy sailing. We work in areas from secluded wooded creeks and sandy beaches to vast open waters for more advanced skills. Lough Derg has been the home of sailing for centuries. We continue this proud tradition into this new millennium and sail on these same safe waters to the present day!! The year is crammed with events, regattas and races with the emphasis on good safe sailing and of course fun afloat and ashore! All courses at UL Adventure Centre use a variety of dinghies from single handers to more fast exhilarating boats.
