UL MedEx

UL MedEx is a supervised exercise and wellness programme delivered at the University of Limerick.

Our friendly and supportive classes help people exercise safely, improve their strength and fitness, and become more confident about being physically active.

Who can join?

UL MedEx is suitable for most people living with:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Respiratory disease with COPD or asthma

It is also suitable for people who have recently completed a cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation programme.

How to join UL MedEx

  1. Speak to your GP, nurse, physiotherapist, cardiologist or another healthcare professional.
  2. With your permission, they will complete the UL MedEx referral form and provide the relevant medical information.
  3. The completed referral form should be emailed to [email protected].
  4. The UL MedEx team will contact you to arrange a free induction session.

Information for healthcare professionals

Referrals can be made by any healthcare professional using the UL MedEx referral form.

What happens next?

All new participants attend a free induction session before beginning the programme. This includes:

  • An introduction to the facilities
  • A baseline health and fitness assessment
  • An opportunity to meet the UL MedEx team
  • Time to ask questions about the programme

Participants are encouraged to attend classes for an initial 12 weeks. An optional follow-up assessment is available after 12 weeks to help participants see their progress.

At the end of the 12 weeks, participants will be provided with options to continue exercising with UL MedEx. Please note that ongoing classes may take place on different days or at different times.

About the classes

  • When: Monday and Wednesday mornings
  • Where: Upstairs jogging track in UL Sport Arena
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Cost: €6 per class
  • Parking: Complimentary parking is available for 90 minutes
  • Format: Supervised, circuit-based exercise
  • Experience: No previous gym experience is needed

The exercises can be adapted to suit individual abilities. Classes focus on improving mobility, strength, fitness and confidence. Participants can also stay for tea or coffee and a chat after class.
